Tuscany is located roughly where the "Italian Boot" would have its knee. Among the six UNESCO World Heritage Sites that are located in the Tuscany region, San Gimignano's walled hill town is one of the most famous. It is located in the province of Siena, which also as a historic center that is classed as UNESCO World Heritage.

San Gimignano's skyline is an unforgettable sight. Its 14 white towers rise up into the deep blue of the Tuscan skies, while the town is entirely surrounded by vineyards and dark green forested hills. Perched on top of a hill with fabulous views over the countryside, San Gimignano has some splendid examples of Gothic and Romanesque architecture to offer, among them the Collegiate Church and the Palazzo Comunale.

Famous for its white wine, the Vernaccia di San Gimignano, the town lies on the ancient pilgrim's route to the Vatican. The Via Francigena is a road that dates back to early medieval days, when pilgrims and merchants passed through the little town on their way to Rome, picking up locally grown saffron and Vernaccia wine on their way. A stroll through the main streets of Via San Giovanni and Via San Matteo, taking in the Piazza Duomo and the Collegiate Church on the way, is an unforgettable experience. The Piazza Agostino and the Church of Sant'Agostino are also two must-see locations.

Unlike other Italian towns from that period, San Gimignano did not lose its towers or reduce all of them in height, so that the towns skyline looks very much as it would have done back in May 1300, when Dante Alighieri was made ambassador of the Guelph League in Tuscany. One of the oldest surviving towers, the Torre Chigi, dates back to 1280, while its highest, the Torre Grossa (54 meters), dates back to 1311. Runner up is the Torre della Rognosa with 51 meters.

San Gimignano is just a 36.8 mile/59.23 km drive from Pisa. The town's museum houses an amazing reconstruction of the entire medieval town as it was 700 years ago, complete with figurines, towers and piazzas.
